Episode 15: How are We to Respond to Evil?

In Episode 015, my guest is Bill Tammeus. Bill and I met through a mutual friend, Jon Willis, with whom we share an interest in interfaith understanding and education. During this episode, he shares the details of HIS September 11, 2001, how he sought comfort then and seeks it now, as well as an update on Karleton’s surviving family members, which is part of our conversation. We also talk about the question of how are we supposed to respond to evil?

While every person in the world, specifically, the United States, was affected by 9.11.2001, I am bringing you a personal story, with intention. Remember, when large, loud, newsworthy events take place, there are ALWAYS individualized, personal stories underlying the enormity of a tragedy.

Talk 980 AM – Kansas City News and Talk on the KMBZ Radio Channel was on while I was driving to work on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. The announcement of something strange happening at the World Trade Center caught my attention. As I placed my car in the park position, the message was delivered that a plane had, indeed, crashed into the World Trade Center. American Airlines Flight 11 from Boston was carrying 76 unknowing victims of terrorism.

Evil. Pure Evil.

One of the victim’s was Karleton Fyfe. Karleton was 31 years old, married to Haven, father to Jackson and an unborn son, at the time. His uncle, Bill Tammeus, is my guest today.

Bill and I met in 2015 through a mutual friend, Jon Willis, with whom we share the interest in interfaith understanding and education.

A fascinating life as a storyteller, Bill has written for numerous publications ranging from the N.Y. Times to the National Catholic Reporter and enjoyed a long stint as a columnist with the Kansas City Star. I find his writing to be engaging and entertaining, while he is also able to offer comfort through thought provoking questions. One such question Bill presents in his 2016, published book, The Value of Doubt; Why Unanswered Questions, Not Unquestioned Answers, Build Faith, is “How are we to respond to evil?” Bill answers his own question, now posed by me during our conversation.

The details of HIS September 11, 2001, how he sought comfort then and seeks it now, as well as an update on Karleton’s surviving family members, is part of our conversation.

While every person in the world, specifically, the United States, was affected by 9.11.200, I am bringing you a personal story, with intention. Remember, when large, loud, newsworthy events take place, there are ALWAYS individualized, personal stories underlying the enormity of a tragedy.

On September 11, 2020, 19 years will have passed.  Don’t be fooled into thinking that the grief, sadness and anger this terrorist attack caused is forgotten.  Everyone affected has learned to carry the grief, in their own way.  Remembering those lives lost and all the lives affected, still today, is one way each of us can provide comfort.

There are many ways to offer remembrance and this is one shared by Bill; September Eleventh Families for Peaceful Tomorrows.

Thank you for helping me shine a light on peace.
